Immigrant
Forage Kochia
*
Is a perennial shrub.
* Is in the same plant family as many valuable arid rangeland species
like saltbush and winter fat.
* Grows where it is planted. Does not move and is not invasive.
* Provides palatable year round forage for livestock and wildlife.
* Protein content runs between 8 and 14 percent depending on the
time of year. Protein levels peak at around 14.7 in August and drops
to a low of 8.9 percent in March.
* Can be established into cheat grass infested ranges, and will,
over time, out-compete the cheat grass.
* Is an excellent plant to use in firebreaks or green strips. The
plants stay green all year and do not have volatile oils in the
leaves which reduces flammability. If forage kochia does burn, it
has a high survival rate.
* Is adapted to dry sites and will establish with as little as 5
inches of annual rainfall, and can tolerate alkaline and saline
soils.
Establishing
Immigrant Forage Kochia
*Plant
seeds no deeper than 1/8 of an inch below the soil surface.
* Can be broadcast seeded November through January as long as there
is no snow cover. During the winter, snow, rain, and the freeze/thaw
action of the soil will lightly incorporate the seeds into the soil
surface.
*To establish a pure stand, seed 3 to 4 pounds pure live seed per
acre.
*Seed 1 to 2 pounds pure live seed per acre when seeding with 5
pounds crested wheatgrass or other perennial bunch grass.
